Peripheral Arterial Disease

چکیده
The circulatory system is a network of specialized tubes (known as blood vessels) that carry oxygenand nutrient-rich blood to the organs and tissues of the body. There are 3 types of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and lymphatics. The heart is the pumping organ of the body. It pumps oxygenand nutrient-rich blood into the aorta, which is the main artery of the body. The branches of the aorta, known as the arteries, carry blood to the organs of the body, such as the kidneys, the liver, and the intestines, as well as to the arms and legs (extremities). The veins return blood from the organs and the extremities to the heart to replenish the blood with oxygen and restart the process. This cycle repeats thousands of times each day. The lymphatics are the third type of blood vessels of the circulation. Lymphatics collect fluid from the tissues of the body and filter it through the lymph nodes. The lymphatics eventually connect with veins to return fluid from the tissues to the blood and the heart. This article focuses on a disorder of the arteries known as peripheral arterial disease (PAD). PAD Is Atherosclerosis of the Extremities PAD is a medical condition caused by blockages of the arteries that provide blood flow to the arms or legs. You may have also heard of this problem referred to as peripheral vascular disease (PVD) or “bad circulation.” In PAD, the arteries become blocked by cholesterol plaque caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a common problem in Western societies. Atherosclerosis can involve almost all of the major arteries of the body. Atherosclerosis of the arteries of the heart is known as coronary artery disease, the process that causes chest pain (angina) and heart attack (myocardial infarction). Atherosclerosis of the arteries of the neck and brain, known as cerebrovascular disease, causes strokes. Atherosclerosis of the arteries of the arms and legs, as well as the aorta, is known as PAD. Many frequently occurring conditions place people at risk for developing PAD. The conditions that increase the risk of PAD are the same risk factors that increase the risk of heart attack or stroke (see the box titled “Common Risk Factors for PAD”). Cigarette smoking, both tobacco and marijuana, is the most important correctable risk factor for the development of PAD, whereas age is the most significant nonreversible risk factor. Researchers are actively working to figure out why PAD specifically and atherosclerosis in general develop in some people but not in others. Some of the newer areas of interest include chronic inflammation of blood vessels and inherited (genetic) factors.

Prevalence of Peripheral Arterial Disease in Diabetic Patients
Objective: Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is a state characterized by atherosclerotic occlusive disease of lower extremities. Diabetes is the main risk factor for PAD. Material and Methods: To assess the prevalence of PAD, a cross sectional study was performed on 352 diabetic patients who referred to Yazd diabetes research center from 2007 to 2010. Vascular assessment was done by measuring ...
متن کاملSurgical infrainguinal revascularization for peripheral arterial disease: factors affecting patency rate
Background: Peripheral arterial disease is a source of morbidity and mortality. Surgical vascular reconstruction is a treatment option but probability of failure and complications are important concerns. In this study, we evaluated outcome of surgical infrainguinal reconstruction and factors affecting graft patency for a period of one year. Methods: In this cohort study, 85 consecutive patie...
متن کاملDiagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment of Peripheral Vascular Disease in Patients with Diabetic Foot Ulcer: Adopted IWGDF Guidance
Introduction: Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is common in diabetic patients, and about half of the patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFU) have concomitant peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The purpose of this study was to select an appropriate and comprehensive clinical guide in the management of DFU. The part of the practical guide that pertains to this is based on three systematic revie...
متن کاملبررسی تأثیر Vacuum-Compression Therapy (VCT) بر جریان خون اندام دیابتی
Background: Chronic diabetes is substantially associated with circulatory disorders in lower limbs. Vacuum-Compression Therapy (VCT) has been commonly used in treatment of peripheral circulatory disorders. VCT is based on intermittent alteration of Positive- Negative pressure phases. The purpose of this study was to determine effects of VCT on diabetic subjects' peripheral blood flow. Methods: I...
متن کاملPeripheral arterial disease and ankle-brachial pressure index as predictors of mortality in residents of Metlika County, Slovenia.
AIM To test how the presence of peripheral arterial disease predicted mortality of middle-aged and elderly residents of Metlika county, a rural area in southeastern Slovenia. METHODS In 1987, we interviewed and examined a representative cohort of 646 subjects aged 45-80 years at inclusion without overt coronary or cerebrovascular disease, for cardiovascular risk factors and measured the ankle...
متن کاملCombined effect of chronic kidney disease and peripheral arterial disease on all-cause mortality in a high-risk population.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Chronic kidney disease (estimated glomerular filtration rate <60 ml/min per 1.73 m(2)) and peripheral arterial disease (ankle-brachial index <0.9) independently predict mortality. It was hypothesized that the risk for death is higher in patients with both chronic kidney disease and peripheral arterial disease compared with those with chronic kidney disease or periphera...
